Meet the Band

OCTOBER 8

If you are a high school woodwind, brass or percussion player, don’t miss the opportunity to rehearse and perform with the Gordon Symphonic Band for a night! This will be an immersive and impactful experience that will give you insight into college music-making and inspire you for your continuing music journey.

The concert repertoire is an international program including: Joropo by Moliero; Puszta by van der Roost; Symphonic Prelude “The Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer” by Camphouse; and others. You will be able to perform with us on the Joropo and a march by Fillmore, Americans, We.

Participating in this special visit day will give you the opportunity to:

  • Take an in-depth tour of the Phillips Music Center
  • Receive information about our music programs
  • Learn from Gordon’s inspiring conductor, Dr. Gabe Southard, and applied lesson instructors by playing in a rehearsal with the Symphonic Band
  • Meet music students at your complimentary dinner at the College’s spectacular dining facility
  • Perform in the Symphonic Band concert that evening

If you are a woodwin, brass or percussion player and would like to rehearse and perform with the Gordon Symphony Orchestra for a night, please register by September 24.

After your registration Dr. Southard will personally reach out to you and provide you with music and practice resources to prepare for the concert.

Meet the Gordon Choirs

OCTOBER 22

If you are a singer, this is an exciting opportunity to learn more about the choral scene at Gordon College and rehearse and perform with the Gordon College choirs in our intergenerational Community of Song concert.

This year we will perform a diverse range of choral repertoire from four different continents! We invite you to come and experience our music-making by performing with us on two combined pieces or by simply listening to the performance.
This will be an impactful musical experience that will help you catch a glimpse of choral singing at Gordon. You don’t want to miss it!

Participating in this special visit day will give you the opportunity to:

  • Learn from our inspiring choir conductors, Dr. Minji Kim and Dr. Ya Lin Huang, by observing or singing in the rehearsal with the choirs
  • Observe or perform in the Community of Song concert that afternoon
  • Repertoire includes; “Love is Love is Love is Love” by Abbie Betinis and “Let the River Run arr. Craig Hella Johnson” 
  • Personally meet and chat with our choir conductors after the concert 
  • Meet music students and learn more about our music programs
  • Join the in-depth tour of Phillips Music Center

Meet the Gordon Symphony Orchestra

OCTOBER 28

If you are a high school string player (violin, viola, cello, double bass), this is an exciting opportunity to rehearse and perform with the Gordon Symphony Orchestra. We invite you to come observe and learn alongside our orchestra. Experience the life of a Gordon College music student and be inspired!

The Gordon College Symphony Orchestra will be playing a concert of works by female composers: Molly Joyce, Soon Hee Newbold and Louise Farrenc.

You will have the opportunity to join us performing the last movement of Symphony No. 3 by Farrenc.

Participating in this special visit day will give you the opportunity to:

  • An in-depth tour of the Phillips Music Center
  • Receive information about our music programs
  • Learn from Gordon's inspiring conductor, Dr. Gabe Southard by observing or playing in a rehearsal with the Symphony Orchestra
  • Meet music students at our complimentary dinner at the College's dining facility
  • Observe or perform in the Symphony Orchestra concert that evening

If you are a violin, viola, cello or bass player and would like to rehearse and perform with the Gordon Symphony Orchestra for a night, please register by October 6.

Explore Jazz Improv Workshop

FEBRUARY 22

The Gordon College Department of Music will be holding a Jazz Improvisation Workshop for high school students with Grammy-nominated tenor saxophonist Mike Tucker.

This free workshop will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 6-9 p.m. at the Phillips Music Center on the Gordon College campus - Check-in starts at 5.30pm

The workshop will focus on building improvisational skills by improving your listening and technical and harmonic vocabulary skills while building confidence playing over various forms and chord changes. All experience levels are welcome. In addition, students will have an opportunity to solo with Mike Tucker and the Gordon College Jazz Ensemble.

If you would like to be part of this great Jazz opportunity and be inspired by Mike Tucker, please register by February 12.
