In a recent NY Times guest essay, psychologist Adam Grant compellingly describes “collective effervescence” as the specific kind of joy we’ve been missing (NYT, July 10, 2021).
Emotions are inherently social. Peak happiness is mostly found in collective activities, he argues. “Cultures where people pursue happiness individually…may actually become lonelier. But in cultures where they pursue happiness socially…people appear to be more likely to gain well-being.”
It’s time for more collective effervescence, isn’t it? It’s time for healthy doses of that missing joy. It’s time to be together again, to be reminded of all that we share.
So please join us this upcoming season for some good laughs with classic, musical and dramatic comedy. It’s time and it will be good for all of us!
Looking forward to seeing you soon –

It’s 1954. Young Benjy Stone is realizing his life-long dream of writing for television, working as a freshman writer on TV’s most popular comedy show: King Kaiser’s Comedy Cavalcade. Just when he thought it couldn’t get any more exciting, Benjy is assigned to “chaperone” the swashbuckling veteran Hollywood star, Alan Swann, Benjy’s movie idol and inspiration since he was a child. It’s a dream come true, until he meets the real Swann and realizes that life is much more complicated than it ever looks in the movies. Ahrens and Flaherty’s coming-of-age musical is based on the 1982 motion picture, My Favorite Year.
