Math Service Opportunities

Gordon students have a wide variety of options to use their math skills in service to the Gordon community and the wider North Shore area. There are many ways to volunteer, as well as a number of paid positions.

• Volunteer:
  • In partnership with various local organizations, the Community Tutoring programs provide safe environments for area children to benefit from tutoring and educational enrichment programs. Many math and education double majors have participated in these programs.
  • The Office of Service Learning works with various community partners that need volunteers with math ability. The office connects students and faculty with various community projects that support student learning and community programs. 
• Service-Learning:
  • The department has experimented with opportunities that combine real curricular content with service to the community. Faculty encourage feedback about this initiative!
  • Several students did an in-class project for the City of Lynn Police Department for Operations Research.
  • Working with several different community partners, Calculus II students have tutored students taking courses preparatory to calculus.
• Paid:
  • Most 100- and 200-level courses have grader positions as a work-study job. If you do well in a course and would enjoy solidifying your skills, you can ask the instructor if there is a need for a grader.
  • College Bound has a number of paid positions for leaders. Occasionally, other programs we have run need leaders as well.
  • For students with exceptional math skills and compassion, the Academic Support Center has a limited number of paid math tutor positions for the Math Lab homework.

Throughout the year, announcements for other volunteer opportunities often appear. Occasional local needs for individual tutoring, or jobs at tutoring centers such as Mathnasium, also arise. Watch your email inbox.
