Summer Studies at ACT

METHODS AND PRACTICES OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION

For summer 2025, Gordon students have the unique opportunity to enroll in ACT's 5-credit college course "Methods and Practices of Archaeological Excavation" at ACT. The American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) in Greece is one of Gordon's partner programs for semester study abroad. Students will join the summer study abroad cohort at ACT, which includes orientation and some excursions. Students will live in international student housing offered by ACT in apartments in Thessaloniki.

This year's unique opportunity includes the ability to provide scholarships for several students to attend the program. ACT has partnered with the Gerondelis foundation to be able to offer these scholarships to Gordon students. The program includes credits, housing and access to the international student services. The cost of flight, insurance and meals would be the responsibility of the student.

The "Methods and Practices of Archaeological Excavation" course is a thematic course exploring methodological approaches and an emphasis on excavation practices, supplemented by site visits in various locations around Thessaloniki and Athens. The course is divided between in-class lectures and fieldwork at the archaeological site of Toumba.

By completing this program, students will learn to:

  • understand major excavation techniques
  • familiarize themselves with an important landmark in Northern Greece and with archaeology as practiced in this part of the world
  • use lab technology in practice
  • think critically about reconstructions of the past

For more info visit the course page on ACT's website.

Other summer courses offered by ACT are also available to students. Scholarship funds may only be applied to Humanities courses.

ACCOMMODATIONS & MEALS

ACT provides off campus accommodation in safe residential areas near downtown Thessaloniki and a short drive from the ACT campus. The housing locations are well served by the city’s public bus system, with buses running at 10-15 minute intervals. Our housing is in close proximity to supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, and post offices. In addition, ACT provides a basic bus service to and from campus once per day.

You would be responsible for your own meals. With 20 euros per day you will be able to get around purchasing your meals at local restaurants and take out places. You can always use the kitchen provided in your accommodations to prepare your own meals and reduce cost.

 APPLICATION PROCEDURE & DEADLINES

All Gordon students applying to this program must first submit an online seat application to the Global Education Office before applying directly to your program. Please make sure to select ACT Summer Study for this program.

Once approved, you will be nominated to ACT and will have to complete an application for them as well. Your acceptance depends on approval from both the GEO and ACT. The first step is applying to the GEO. The application deadline for summer study abroad and seminars is January 20th. This gives you enough time to apply to ACT after Gordon approval.
