Gordon Symphony Orchestra Welcomes New Conductor

Gordon College welcomes Dr. Jong-hun Bae, internationally recognized orchestra and opera conductor, as the conductor of the Gordon Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Bae is the winner of the 2015 International Conductors Workshop and Competition and a jury board member for Germany’s 2015 ENKOR International Piano and Violin Competition and the 2016 ENKOR International Chamber Music Competition. Over the past decade, Dr. Bae has conducted around the world—in Austria, England, Korea and Romania—and throughout the U.S., including Maryland, Indiana, Colorado and Georgia. An accomplished musician, he has garnered acclaim for his excellence in presenting new works by living composers and breathing new life into the traditional repertoire. In addition to his work with the Gordon Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Bae is the resident conductor for the Salt Lake Symphony, guest conductor for the Utah Youth Orchestras and Ensembles, and principal guest conductor for the TIRO Symphony Orchestra and the TIRO Youth Orchestra in Korea. In addition to conducting, Dr. Bae is a champion for education, particularly for girls in Southeast Asia and Africa whose access is limited. He was recently appointed as vice president of the International Culture Diplomatic Mission at the International Relief Organization in Korea. Dr. Bae holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Pusan National University in Korea, and a master’s in music (conducting) and doctorate in musical arts (orchestral conducting) from the University of Utah. He previously worked with the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, where he earned his Graduate Performance Diploma (orchestral conducting). Dr. Bae will debut as conductor of the Gordon College Symphony Orchestra at the Fall Orchestra Concert on Sunday, November 1, at 3 p.m. in the A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel.
