Sociology

Overview

Want to explore the cultural, structural and institutional forces of social change and globalization? Interested in better understanding societies and human behavior?

With a sociology minor, you’ll cover topics pivotal for learning how to live in today’s world—from diversity in the U.S. to poverty throughout the world, from competing ideologies of inequality to culturally informed femininity and masculinity. This minor will prepare you for graduate studies in sociology and allied fields such as education, law, health policy, media, religion, cultural studies and globalization.

Why study sociology at Gordon?

Our faculty have applied sociological experience which focuses on gender, religion, race, ethnicity, globalization and social change—all within a framework of the Christian faith. With courses like Diversity in U.S. Populations and Power, Prestige and Poverty, you’ll consider how people are more than the sum of their individualistic dispositions and how these factors apply to your chosen major.

What can Christians bring to sociology?

1 Corinthians tells us that although the body is one, it has many parts. The same idea applies to an individual and what makes them tick. By recognizing that we are shaped by historical social forces and are also dynamically changing, sociologists can help cultivate meaningful conversations and positive change in social institutions, social structures and people's everyday lives.
