Journey to Success

Our Journeys program is designed to guide Gordon College students in Psychology and Social Welfare through a structured, intentional path toward graduation and their future careers. Students in Psychology choose from one of four journeys—Clinical, Cognitive Neuroscience, Human Development, or General—allowing them to tailor their experiences based on their interests and career aspirations. Students in Social Welfare are guided toward their best journey, which may include a 4+1 Master’s in Social Work program. Throughout their four years, students engage in purposeful planning, reflection, and skill-building to ensure they are well-prepared for life after college.

First Year

Foundations and Exploration

The first year is focused on welcoming students to campus and ensuring they are in the major(s) and minor(s) that best align with their interests and goals. Advisors and faculty members provide guidance to help students make informed decisions about their academic direction, ensuring they are set on a path that will maximize their potential and engagement.

Second Year

Specialization and Portfolio Development

During the sophomore year, students refine their focus by confirming their chosen concentration within their major. In Research Methods II, students participate in exercises led by the Career and Calling Institute to clarify their career goals, expand their interests, and develop practical strategies for achieving their aspirations. At this stage, we introduce ePortfolios, encouraging students to begin documenting their academic and professional growth by caching their work in a portfolio that is available to them, free, after graduation.

Third Year

Academic Planning and Experiential Learning

As juniors, students review their academic plans with their evolving career goals in mind. This is an opportunity for them to consider studying abroad, engaging in internships, or taking on research projects that align with their interests. By integrating these experiences into their academic journey, students gain hands-on exposure that enhances their knowledge and skill set.

Fourth Year

Finalizing Professional Materials and Career Readiness

In their final year, students focus on finalizing key materials essential for their transition into the workforce or further studies. This includes preparing resumes, documenting research experiences, crafting personal statements, and integrating faith into their professional and academic pursuits. By reflecting on their learning and experiences, students develop a holistic perspective on their skills and calling.

Throughout their four years, students are encouraged to continually identify and document the skills they acquire. The ePortfolio serves as a dynamic archive for academic work, research, internships, and personal reflections, equipping students with tangible evidence of their competencies. This ongoing process not only enhances their self-awareness but also provides valuable resources for job applications and career advancement.

Through the Journeys program, we empower students to navigate their college years with clarity and purpose, ensuring they are well-equipped to transition into meaningful careers and lifelong vocations.
