Combined Languages

Overview

Bilingualism has intrinsic value in enriching the human experience through access to different cultures, traditions, and canons of literature. Language learning can even protect the brain from age-related decline, reports the BBC, referencing a study published in the Annals of Neurology.

With Gordon College's combined languages minor, you will work to achieve proficiency in two languages. You will learn how the languages are structured and meaning is communicated. Since language lies at the heart of every culture, learning multiple languages will help you enter new worlds with a deeper sense of academic scholarship and human wonder. Once you have become proficient in two foreign languages, you will be well-prepared to engage with others across a variety of careers and professions.

Why study combined languages at Gordon?

Our program offers advanced-level instruction in several languages—including Spanish, French, Greek, Latin and Hebrew—all through a framework of faith.  Located in the Greater Boston area, Gordon finds itself in a rich melting pot of cultures and languages. Here, you will have opportunities to practice your languages in nearby cities and in on-campus clubs.

What can Christians bring to combined languages?

Language can be one of the greatest causes for misunderstandings, division and fear in our world. In order to engage with others with clarity and empathy, Christians should have a deep understanding of various cultures and know how to communicate in other languages. Christians who can speak multiple languages not only have the chance to share the Gospel with more people but also provide support, comfort and friendship through the connection of a shared language.
