Overview
When you see people arguing, is your instinct to jump in and help them work things out? Do you believe there’s validity in hearing points from both sides of a conflict?
If so, Gordon College’s peace and conflict studies minor might be a perfect fit. This program will prepare you with practical knowledge and skills in conflict analysis, prevention and resolution for individuals, groups, institutions and communities. By delving into a deeper understanding of the needs and fears of others, you’ll be well equipped to compassionately help people move forward to reconciliation.
Why study peace and conflict studies at Gordon?
At Gordon, we believe that resolving conflict isn’t simply an academic discipline
or about following a system of rules, but it’s about healing relationships and restoring them to the way God originally created them to be.
This minor uses the context of the Christian liberal arts to help you harness your God-given empathy, your passion for justice, and your concern for peace, whether you choose to specialize in community transformation or global justice. Our location on the North Shore puts us close to a network of nonprofits, churches and service organizations where you can volunteer, and our connections across the globe will allow you to intern or study abroad in places where you can put your education to work.
What can Christians bring to situations of conflict?
In Matthew 5, Jesus says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.” This means that, as Christians, and children of God, we’re called to be peacemakers. As Christians who follow a God of peace, our calling is to run toward tough conflicts and conversations, not away from them. We can show the world that community transformation takes place when we seek justice and the goal of peace.
