Classical Studies

Overview

Do you find yourself daydreaming about the Roman empire or Greek architecture?

With a classical studies minor from Gordon College, you’ll explore the enormous influence of ancient civilizations. Dive deep into classical cultures and trace how they influenced today’s philosophy, literature, law, politics, mathematics and other fields. By studying the classics you’ll gain proficiency in Latin or Greek, rediscover some of this glorious heritage and be prepared to use the wisdom of the past to help solve problems of the present.

Why pursue classical studies at Gordon?

At Gordon you’ll study alongside professors and peers who will help you approach these topics through the lens of Christian faith. Though the Roman and Greek empires were pagan in nature, they had an interesting relationship with Christianity, ultimately impacting the growth of the Western Church.

With small class sizes, you’ll receive personalized attention and be invited into special opportunities to experience these cultures firsthand, thanks to Gordon’s connections in Italy and Greece.

What can Christians bring to classical studies?

Christians engage with the incredible knowledge and power of these ancient empires through the lens of faith to better understand societal flourishing and advancement. By pairing faith with wisdom, Christians can be strong witnesses of God’s greatness.

Classical Studies Courses

By "Classics" we mean the language and literature of ancient Greece and Rome.  Classical culture has had an enormous influence upon our Western civilization, in ways as varied as philosophy, literature, law, politics, and mathematics, to name but a few.  But recognition of the fundamental role of the Classics has gradually faded over the years, to the point that many if not most people find it hard to justify the usefulness of studying Classics at all.

Abigail Sargent

"I’m incredibly lucky to be able to pursue history in an academic setting. It always amazes me how each historical research topic and each new course bring to light new ways that humans have lived out their humanity—some of which are strange, from our perspective, but some of which are startlingly familiar."

Medieval History Ph.D. candidate, Princeton University
