Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Overview

Interested in teaching abroad? Looking for a practical skillset that will support global ministry? Gordon College’s interdisciplinary teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) minor equips you with knowledge and skills to teach English to speakers of other languages, whether children or adults.

Learn about the structure of language, develop skills for crosscultural communication and hone your teaching skills using evidence-based practices grounded in the science of learning—all preparing you for international, multicultural impact.

Why study TESOL at Gordon?

Along with Gordon's outstanding linguistics courses, you'll also benefit from a literacy teacher preparation program grounded in the science of reading, for which the National Council on Teacher Quality has awarded Gordon an A+.

Our faculty have years of practical, real-world experience, and they come ready to prepare you with culturally and linguistically sustaining teaching practices, all from a Christ-centered faith foundation. Through observations, teaching practice and a student teaching practicum, you’ll graduate with hours of hands-on experience, well-prepared for vocational success.

How can I live out my faith in the field of TESOL?

Christians teaching English to speakers of other languages can offer a place of safety and belonging through the connection of a shared language. In their day-to-day interactions, teachers can celebrate the fact that we are all created in God’s image and are worthy of dignity and respect.

Aleah Tarnoviski

I have been consistently recognized for my readiness and undergrad preparation. . . Due to my highly specialized student-teaching at a charter school in Boston (made possible by my professors) and my rigorous experience teaching a wide variety of students throughout my time at Gordon, I was hired for my role immediately. . . In the beginning of my career, I was constantly asked where I learned to plan, improvise and make decisions for students the way I did, and my answer was always, ‘Gordon College.’
