Special Education

Overview

Do you have a heart to see all students thrive, no matter the physical, cognitive or emotional challenges they face? Are you interested in advocating for individuals with disabilities in schools, clinical practice settings or ministry?

Gordon College’s special education minor equips you to maximize your impact through the creation of safe, inclusive learning environments and the design of evidence-based, assessment-informed interventions. Couple this minor with an education major, and you’ll graduate with eligibility for dual licensure.

Special education licensure is offered through both undergraduate and graduate education programs. Undergraduate education majors can add PreK–2 or PreK–8 moderate disabilities licensure. Graduate students can also add Grade 5–12 licensure.

Why study special education at Gordon?

The National Council on Teacher Quality gives Gordon College an A+ for outstandingly effective methods of evidence-based reading instruction. With dyslexia being the most common learning disability in the US, you’ll be well-prepared by experienced faculty who’ve also worked as special education teachers and administrators. Add in our strong Christian faith foundation, and you’ll be on track to live out your calling to care for others.

How can I live out my faith in the field of special education?

By recognizing the God-given dignity and worth of every person, special education teachers couple hopeful, compassionate hospitality with evidence-based practices to help every student thrive. Educators working with students with special needs are positioned to advocate for inclusive policies and ethical practices that affirm the worth of all students.

Matthew Taylor

Gordon was the beginning of my foundation for teaching, and I am constantly leaning on what I learned there. My professors provided a wealth of knowledge, and the classes focused on working with real students rather than just learning from a textbook. I now seek to give back to students in higher education through the classes I teach, challenging them to think differently about how we can teach and engage students at all grades and learning levels.
