Math Specialist

Overview

The math specialist degree is designed for current educators and aspiring teacher leaders who wish to better understand how students learn math in order to help them succeed, despite learning challenges. Through hands-on experience at the Gordon College Math Clinic, math specialists learn how to assess and address learning differences in math calculation, math fluency, problem-solving, number sense, math vocabulary and working memory.

Considering becoming a math coach, interventionist or leader?

Gordon College's math specialist program is designed to empower educators who aspire to become teacher leaders in mathematics, particularly those working with PreK–8 students who face challenges learning math. Through this program educators acquire essential skills to accurately assess, differentiate and remediate areas of difficulty in math instruction.

The curriculum is grounded in research-based instructional practices, equipping participants with knowledge and tools to effectively implement math instruction and intervention. By focusing on evidence-based approaches, the program ensures educators are equipped to provide targeted support and foster a positive learning environment for all students.

Individuals with a license, a master’s degree and minimum teaching experience of one year under that license, may opt for the math specialist Ed.S. degree program. To add an additional license in elementary mathematics or grades 5–8, take the MTEL exam at the specified mathematics level.
