EDU 695 Introduction to Multisensory Structured Language Instruction with the Wilson Reading System®

Examines the definition of dyslexia and common characteristics, reading research and the five areas of reading in relation to students beyond grade two with persistent phonological coding deficits. Specifically studies the Wilson Reading System® (WRS) program, including the structure of the English language, and how to teach this language structure with direct, multisensory methods using a ten-part lesson plan. The course also addresses student identification and placement, program implementation, progress monitoring, scheduling, and creating a successful classroom environment. After completing EDU695, you have up to five years to complete the Level 1 certification courses (EDU696/697).

EDU696 Intensive Instruction for the Non-Responsive Reader

Cost: $2340 (6 Graduate Credits)*

Presents in detail the multisensory structured language instruction that is required for teaching students beyond grade two with word-level deficits who are unresponsive to previous instruction. This course provides practical application of reading research, with particular emphasis on phonological awareness, phonics, and spelling at the beginning levels of decoding and encoding. Provides specific procedures to teach the concepts presented in WRS Steps 1-6. Additional topics include accuracy and automaticity of word recognition, fluency with decodable text, vocabulary instruction, and listening/reading comprehension at the beginning stages of reading. This Asynchronous course is open for 9 months.

EDU697 Clinical Intensive Instruction for the Non-Responsive Reader Practicum using the Wilson Reading System®

Cost: $1170 (3 Graduate Credits) + $600 lab fee for five observations
Online Synchronous: Practicum using the Wilson Reading System® supported by 8 live webinars/ 5 Observations via Zoom, starting in September and January
 

Supervised practicum requires the successful delivery of a minimum of 65 WRS lessons with an individual student selected according to WRS criteria and student mastery through WRS Step 4.2. A Wilson® Reading System trainer observes the participant working with his/her student five times during the practicum via Zoom. The teacher must demonstrate mastery of the Wilson® Reading System lesson plan, including the use of materials, all procedures and methodologies, as well as demonstrate diagnostic teaching and planning. This course typically takes one school year, but students can take up to 12 months to complete.

EDU795 Wilson Reading System® Advanced Strategies for Multisensory Structured Language Group Instruction Course

Cost: $390 (1 Graduate Credit) + $400 fee*
Online Synchronous: in Fall, Winter, and Summer

This three-day (15-hour) course provides strategies, modeling and practice as participants learn about the critical aspects of WRS® small-group instruction, including how to optimally deliver WRS® Lesson Blocks 1, 2 and 3. Participants learn about advanced and differentiated instruction for students to further develop vocabulary, comprehension and fluency skills. This course prepares participants to implement WRS® in a small-group setting, teaches how to properly monitor student progress and provides the prerequisite for the WRS® Group Mastery Practicum.

EDU796 Wilson Reading System® (WRS) Group Mastery Practicum

Cost: $1,170 (3 Graduate Credits) + $100 fee*
Online Synchronous: starting in September and January
Prerequisite: Advanced Strategies for MSL Group Instruction (EDU795)

Supervised practicum requires successful delivery of a minimum of 50 WRS® lessons with an approved group of three to four students reaching WRS® Substep 3.1 or higher and submission of at least three video-recorded lessons for observation and feedback. Students have up to 15 months in which to complete the practicum.

EDU797 Wilson Reading System® (WRS) Advanced Word Study Online Course

Online Asynchronous: Offered on a rolling basis
Prerequisite: Completion of WRS Intensive Instruction for the Non-Responsive Reader (Steps 1-6) Online Course

Advanced coursework provides in-depth strategies to implement multisensory structured language (MSL) instruction. This 60-hour online course provides instruction in advanced concepts of decoding and encoding to effectively use multisensory techniques to teach more complicated structures of the English language. The Advanced Word Study course is aligned with the systematic sequence of Wilson Reading System® (WRS) Steps 7-12, including spelling option procedures, contractions, additional affixes, Latin bases and Greek combining forms, as well as the following syllable types: R-controlled Syllable and Double Vowel “D” Syllable (vowel digraphs and diphthongs). Detailed instruction is provided for each of the substeps through video demonstrations, animations, text, printable materials and assessments. Students have up to 15 months in which to complete the practicum.

EDU798 Advanced Clinical Intensive Instruction for the Non-Responsive Reader

Prerequisite: WRS Level I Certification, enrollment or completion of corresponding advanced coursework [WRS Advanced Word Study: Online Course (Steps 7-12)], bachelor’s degree in education (or related field)

In the Wilson Reading System® (WRS) Steps 7-12 Practicum, participants focus on advanced word study and application of reading and writing skills with progressively more challenging levels of text. The practicum requires successful delivery of a minimum of 50 lessons with an approved student and the submission of at least three video-recorded lessons for observation and feedback.
