Innovation & Social Enterprise

Overview

Most people seek employment, but some create it! Does initiating change excite you? Are you willing to dream big, even if it means risking failure? Consider adding a minor in innovation and social enterprise to your studies and start developing the tools you’ll need to make a lasting impact. Applicable across all majors and virtually every field, you’ll learn to translate personal convictions and ideas into tangible actions and plans.

Whether you’re planting a church, launching a high-tech venture or expanding a nonprofit, you’ll need the practical, creative, grassroots solutions associated with entrepreneurial thinking as well as the values of Christianity to succeed in this field.

Why study innovation and social enterprise at Gordon?

Our required internship component guarantees you’ll have real-world experience and make real-world impact—well before graduation day. Studying entrepreneurship in a Christian, liberal arts community with our experienced faculty will help you successfully connect innovative concepts to your specific calling.

What can Christians bring to innovation and social enterprise?

God created us in the image of him—meaning we have the opportunity to be creators, too. By focusing their daily work on innovation, Christians can bring creative solutions to areas in need and refocus the idea of “success” from strictly making a profit to prioritizing the wellbeing of a society.

Innovation & Social Enterprise Courses

The Innovation & Social Enterprise (ISE) minor aims to inspire and equip students to start and operate their own ventures. As defined here, a social enterprise is any organization (non-profit or business), event or initiative that is largely motivated by a desire for social change or impact. This minor compliments any major and seeks to develop student-driven initiative, creativity, teamwork, experiential learning, and practical solutions to real-world challenges. Courses offer the basic fundamentals of crafting a vision and coordinating stakeholders and resources as required to sustain new and growing organizations. This field of study has a natural bias toward international development and sustainability issues, product/service development, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and grassroots leadership. For more information, please contact the Dean of the School of Business, Steven Nelson.
