"The Dokes Program has opened up new doors for me and made furthering my education possible. This program has connected me to resources to help kick start my seminary education, and I've had the chance to connect with other students who have similar goals to me. The personalized paradigms have helped me breakdown my academic plan, and I've loved getting a taste of what seminary will be like! I'm very excited for how the Dokes Program will evolve, develop, and help future students streamline their seminary education."

Why study for a dual degree in pastoral ministries?

In addition to learning biblical languages, studying spiritual formation and developing a rich theological foundation for the future, you will gain entrepreneurial and business skills. Even though a church or a nonprofit may have a very different mission than most marketplace corporations, it’s increasingly important for church leaders to know how to problem-solve with limited resources, create a financially sustainable budget, reach diverse audiences through digital channels and manage people well (whether that’s through mediating conflict or building teams).

What careers can I pursue with a Master of Divinity or Master of Arts?

Most of our graduates will go on to become pastors, missionaries, teachers, chaplains and nonprofit founders, but there are others who will use their degree for other callings.

  • Common career paths include:
  • Senior pastor
  • Associate pastor
  • Youth pastor
  • Children’s pastor
  • Military chaplain
  • Hospital chaplain
  • Professor
  • Nonprofit leader
  • Missionary
  • Community development worker

About Gordon-Conwell

Gordon is fortunate to have one of the top 10 American seminaries located just two and a half miles from our campus, which is no coincidence. The “Gordon” name in Gordon-Conwell comes from Gordon Divinity School, which was Gordon College’s graduate seminary program that began in the early 1930s. Later, in 1969, Mr. J. Howard Pew, Dr. Harold John Ockenga and Rev. Billy Graham united two theological schools, Gordon Divinity School and Conwell School of Theology, because they saw a need for a strong, evangelical seminary in the Northeast. Since then, the seminary has brought in students like Xiong Yan, Scott and Kimberly Hahn, and Timothy Keller, who are known for their incredible fortitude, faithfulness and leadership. Now, the seminary’s main campus in Hamilton, MA, is home to over 800 students who represent 71 denominations and 41 countries.

The Legacy of Robert and Carol Dokes

The Dokes Ministry Scholars program honors the legacy of Robert ’30 and Carol ’30 (Crews) Dokes—two Gordon theology graduates who dedicated their lives to Christian ministry and service, even in times of war and when met with great prejudice. Their lives illustrate just how rich and multi-faceted full-time ministry can be and how that call to ministry may look very different in another setting and season of life.
